Section 4 — Mission Statement
Engineer a democratic Republic for the 21st century.
The mission is direct: use advanced information technology to put an informed electorate in command of the questions that govern them, and to restore confidence in government itself.
The Mission
Our primary mission.
- Engineer a 21st century democratic Republic
- To Empower an informed Electorate using advanced Information Technologies
- To Enhance Citizenship, Participation & Confidence in government
The Lineage
The Foundation embodies Caltech’s own two-fold Mission Statement.
To marshal “… the world’s brightest minds and most innovative tools to address fundamental scientific questions and pressing societal challenges.”
No “societal challenge” today is more “pressing” than using “innovative new IT tools” to give modern substance to the meaning of a democratic Republic.
Wherein the People themselves decide directly all matters within their reach and competence.
— Thomas Jefferson

The initiative began with a challenge posed to Caltech alumni in 2018. It has grown into a working plan for secure online referendum voting.
